Carmel Guard Wins WGI Scholastic World Championship!

Carmel Guard Wins WGI Scholastic World Championship!

The Carmel High School Winter Guard won the Winter Guard International (WGI) Scholastic World Championship this past Saturday in the finals portion of the WGI World Championships at University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Winter guard is the sport of indoor color guard. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Color guards can be found in high schools, middle schools, some universities, and also some independent organizations, some of which are related to drum corps per the WGI website. Carmel’s Winter Guard performed their show “OMEGA” with music by Avro Part to a crowd of over 10,000 people.  The show explores the use of the universal symbol of Eternity—the circle and the abstract depiction of the end of eternity.

The three-day event drew amazing performances from over 300 color guard units from across the nation and around the world.   Carmel’s Director, Rosie Queen, said, “The 2015 season has been an absolute DREAM season!!  This amazing team of students, designers, staff, and parents pulled off an incredible victory.  Being crowned the WGI Scholastic World Champion is the highest honor that any high school program can achieve…. and WE did it!! The Carmel Guard ladies are the hardest working kids I know. They are always willing to go the extra mile to pay attention to detail and push to the next level.  These are lessons they will take with them for the rest of their life—beyond any trophy or medal.   I am so incredibly proud of the these ladies for achieving and following their dreams.”

Winter Guard units from Flanagan HS in Pembroke Pines, Florida and James Logan HS in Union City, California rounded out the top 3 with units from Warren Central High School, Avon High School and Center Grove High School placing in the top 15 units in the finals competition.  This is the 7th year in a row Carmel has been a finalist in this premier Color Guard competition. The Carmel World Guard won the WGI Scholastic World Class Championship two previous times, in 2013 and 2011.  In 2007, Carmel won the Scholastic “Open” Class at the WGI Championships.

The Carmel High School Winter Guard is part of the Carmel Band program.  The program includes the Marching Band and Color Guard, 4 Jazz Ensembles, 6 Concert Bands, multiple chamber ensembles, Winter Percussion, and 3 Winter Guards.  100 students participate in the color guard program at Carmel while an additional 400 students participate in the wind and percussion ensembles at Carmel High School.

The Carmel Color Guard competes with the Marching Band during the fall and then competes indoors over the winter in Winter Guard competitions.  If you love to perform and dance in front of thousands of people, travel around the country, and want to learn how to toss a flag, rifle, or sabre up into the air… The Carmel Color Guard is for YOU!!  NO experience is necessary; we will teach you everything you need to know!

Auditions for the Carmel Guard will be held Tuesday and Thursday, May 5th & 7th from 6:00-8:30pm and are open to anyone that will be in grades 9-12 at Carmel H.S. in the fall of 2015. Registration begins at 5:30pm in the Main Band Room area at Carmel H.S.   Please plan on attending BOTH days of auditions. Dress in workout clothes & athletic shoes (no jeans). Come out to make new friends and be a part of this 6 time State Champion and 4 time World Champion team!

The Carmel World Guard and “A” guard had a great weekend at the WGI Indianapolis Regional. The “A” guard placed 6th in their Scholastic A round on Saturday. This great and talented group of girls had a blast watching Finals on Sunday at Warren Central H.S. and were very excited to get in front of a WGI audience for the first time!

The Carmel World Guard dominated the Scholastic World competition this weekend, taking 1st place in both Prelims and Finals, and scoring an impressive 7+ points higher than any other high school guard in the competition. This group of girls has been working so hard for months now and all their training and hard work is paying off!! They are achieving at the highest level.  Many of the audience members and fans of our group can’t stop talking about how talented the girls are and how entertaining and fresh this very technically demanding show — “Full Spectrum” — is proving to be for this year’s team.

We still have 6 weeks until WGI World Championships and competition with other Scholastic groups from all over the country, including the defending Scholastic World Champion: Flanagan H.S. from Florida. We go back to work on Tuesday, putting finishing touches on the show, working changes, cleaning the program, and working on elevating performance levels.

The World Guard had a special guest in the audience this Sunday at WGI Regional Finals: Mr. John Williams, principal of Carmel H.S., who came out to watch the girls compete and show his never-ending support of our program. He was very impressed and proud of the dedication and passion the girls show on and off the floor in representing Carmel H.S.!

Our next competition for World Guard & “A” Guard is IHSCGA State Prelims on March 9th at Decatur Central H.S.

Stay Hungry…

Carmel High School Winter Guard is bringing home the world championship trophy for their performance of Stay Foolish, Stay Hungry.

Their methods are hardly foolish, and they are surrounded by too many supportive families to ever have to go hungry.  But their interpretation of the show was the driving force in achieving their goal, and in teaching others the message through their movements.

A united team of 34 girls backed by families making costumes, nursing injuries and cheering them through struggles went into last week’s world finals undefeated.  They’d been there three times before, but this year they had something different.  They had a pattern of what life is about, and they were there to express it through music and artful athleticism.

They had perfected their performance with practice and successful performances, but the true perfection came from high school girls, most not even 18, already understanding life while remembering it is something we won’t have one day.

Their inspiration came from Steve Jobs’ commencement speech titled “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” at Stanford University.  The beginning of his speech said, “Life is about finding how the dots connect, trusting they will connect and understanding you can only see their connection by looking backward.”

He said he was only there to tell three stories about love, life, and death.  Like many, he had experienced all three by age 40, and it took that to learn how the dots in his life were connected.  A group of 15-18 year olds’ united passion for winter guard and trust in one another has brought out an old soul in all of them, making a group of teens wise beyond their years and more grateful for their shared experiences and ambitious teamwork than a trophy.

Lisa Dye’s freshman daughter is on the team and she says the leadership and commitment the girls have for each other has made a tremendous impact on her daughter.

“When you’re on a team or in a family, you’re reminded there’s something bigger than yourself and with that comes opportunities to be accountable to yourself and to other people,” Dye said.  “My daughter joined the team as a little girl and now, in just one year, she’s matured into a young woman.”

Her 15-year-old daughter, Emily says she sees life with different eyes since her very first performance with the team.

“I was nervous for the first one and it didn’t go great; there were things I could’ve done better, but the older members were encouraging us throughout our entire performance, they gave us the chance to believe in ourselves,” Emily said.

Emily said when she first started she only knew two people on the team, and she was still trying to learn how to budget her time with her family, homework and intense practices.  But it was the older girls’ dedication to believing in her that made her not give up.

“We’d go through hard times while being exhausted from the intense training; sometimes it felt like it wasn’t going anywhere,” Emily said.  “Now, to have the chance to look back and see what we did and how rewarding it is to see this kind of ending is a really cool feeling.  It has really taught me when you’re working hard with a group people we can do anything together and that makes us want to work even harder now.”

At just 15, she and the rest of the team see deeper than the surface shimmer of their world championship trophy.  Like any winning team, they have a sense of pride seeing Carmel High School next to world champions, but when one of them sees their reflection in their trophy’s golden sheen, they see a team that was able to connect the dots.  They see 34 girls capable of embracing each others’ pasts while finding the dots in all of their lives.

After, they strapped on their all black costumes with one white line to symbolize the line that connects each member’s dots so audiences can see how a team trusting each other can lead to finding the true pattern of life.

Like Steve Jobs said, it’s all about looking backward to see your dots so you can move forward to connect them.

One of the team’s youngest members thought the same way when she held the trophy:

“Having the chance to look back and see what we came from is what made winning amazing,” Emily said.
